LESSON 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering, Part 1 (October 10-11, 2018)

LESSON 1:  Introduction to Civil Engineering, Part 1

Context:  This is the first lesson in a series of lessons introducing High School students to the field of civil engineering
Objective:  The objective of this lesson is for students to learn the basic meaning of civil engineering.  What sub-areas does it include?  What do Civil Engineers do?

Method: This assignment involves research and reporting. Follow this article and provide the information where requested. This is an INDIVIDUAL (not group) assignment. Please hand write your responses (not typed or printed) in sentence and paragraph (not outline) form.   This assignment is due at the end of class. It can be accomplished within one class period, but you will need to work quickly.

Supplemental Materials Engineering Conclusion, Oct. 9, 2018

During our series on materials engineering, we spent more time investigating the materials than the engineers who work with them. Please write a paper (one page minimum) summarizing what materials Engineers are working on today. Please include some important or revolutionary products these engineers are working on that will have an important impact on our lives in the future. Also, where is this research taking place?

Materials Engineering Lesson 4 (October 4-5, 2018) — SUPPLEMENT

This is the SUPPLEMENT for the last Lesson in our introduction to materials engineering. Today we are going to take a look at how materials engineering has greatly improved the performance and durability of aircraft.

Please write a paper, which must meet all of the following criteria:

Materials Engineering, Lesson 3

This lesson was a class participation project.  We discussed the possible use of 5 different types of materials as potential components in three different PROJECTS.  Each team promoted it’s product group to a panel of judges, for each project.

Since we can’t create the same team participation for the make up assignment, the assignment is modified somewhat.

Please write a report of at least one page, explaining why non-ferrous metals (see definition below) are the best material choice to incorporate in the project described below.   Choose one or more material in this group to incorporate in the project.
