Warm Up, October 4-5, 2018

During the past few lessons, we have discussed some of the popular materials that engineers use when designing new projects. One material property we haven’t discussed yet is the ability of a material to either be a magnet, or be attracted to a magnet. Explain when these properties would be desirable or undesirable. Give at lease 2 examples each of applications where these properties would be (A) desirable; and (B) undesirable.

Supplemental Question: Improvement in materials in the last 100 years have greatly improved the quality, performance, and longevity of many consumer products. List at least 5 ways that improvements in materials have impacted the automotive industry. For each way listed, explain what difference the improvement has made in our modern motor vehicles.
